Following the Cross-Lent

2 March, 2025

Introduction:
The season of Lent is a time of reflection, repentance, and renewal. It is a journey of following the cross, where we are called to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Christ. As we walk this path, we are reminded of the sacrifices Jesus made and the temptations He overcame. Let us explore what it means to truly follow the cross during this Lenten season.

1. Denying Ourselves and Taking Up the Cross (Matthew 16:24-26):

  • Jesus calls us to a life of self-denial and sacrifice.
  • Taking up the cross means surrendering our will to God’s will, even when it is difficult.
  • The world offers temporary gains, but following Christ leads to eternal life.
  • Reflect: What are the things in your life that you need to deny to fully follow Christ?

2. Jesus, Our High Priest Who Understands (Hebrews 4:15-16):

  • Jesus experienced every temptation we face, yet He remained without sin.
  • During Lent, we are reminded that we can approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, knowing He understands our struggles.
  • In our weakness, we find strength in His mercy and grace.
  • Reflect: How can you draw near to God during this season of Lent?

3. Watching and Praying in the Face of Temptation (Matthew 26:41):

  • Jesus’ words in the Garden of Gethsemane remind us of the importance of vigilance and prayer.
  • The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Lent is a time to strengthen our spiritual disciplines.
  • Through prayer and fasting, we resist temptation and draw closer to God.
  • Reflect: What areas of your life require more prayer and vigilance?

4. Following Christ’s Example in the Wilderness (Matthew 3:17-18, 4:1-10):

  • After His baptism, Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
  • He overcame temptation by relying on the Word of God.
  • Lent mirrors Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, calling us to rely on God’s Word and resist the enemy’s lies.
  • Reflect: How can you use Scripture to overcome temptation in your life?

Conclusion:
Following the cross during Lent is not an easy journey, but it is a transformative one. As we deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Christ, we are reminded of His sacrifice and His victory over sin. Let us approach this season with humility, prayer, and a commitment to draw closer to God. May we emerge from Lent renewed in spirit and strengthened in faith, ready to live as disciples of Christ.
