Sermon Summary: “Be the Difference”

Scripture Focus: Matthew 5:13-16 & Galatians 5:22-23

Big Idea: We cannot change the flavor or the darkness of the world by blending into it. We are called to distinctively flavor and illuminate our surroundings by actively living out the fruit of the Spirit.

The Call to Distinction (Matthew 5:13-16)

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus doesn’t tell us to try and become salt and light; He states that if we follow Him, we are salt and light.

  • Salt preserves and adds flavor. In ancient times, salt was a necessity to keep things from rotting. As “salt,” our presence in our families, workplaces, and communities should prevent moral decay and bring out the best flavor in life. If salt loses its saltiness, it becomes useless.

  • Light exposes darkness and guides the way. Light is meant to be visible, placed on a stand, not hidden under a basket.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16

The Substance of the Difference (Galatians 5:22-23)

If Matthew 5 is the command to be salt and light, Galatians 5 provides the content. How do we actually taste different? How do we shine brightly? We do it through the Fruit of the Spirit:

  • Love, joy, peace, longsuffering (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

The world is often marked by division, anxiety, and self-indulgence. When a Christian responds to chaos with peace, or treats an adversary with gentleness and self-control, they instantly become “salty” and “bright.” The fruit of the Spirit is the exact toolkit we need to “be the difference.”

Key Takeaways for Everyday Life

  1. Don’t Blend In: Salt is only useful when it is distinct from the food it seasons. We must maintain our Christian identity and values even when culture pressures us to conform.

  2. Uncover the Light: Good works aren’t meant for self-glory, but to point people toward God. When we practice kindness or patience, it acts as a beacon in a dark room.

  3. Stay Connected to the Vine: We cannot force ourselves to produce fruit, nor can we manufactured true saltiness on our own. It only happens when we walk closely with the Holy Spirit daily.
